undine spragg

ok, got a goody.

So i just finished The Custom of the Country and I am shocked at the entire story. If you're in to late 19th century lit, it is seriously a goody. So anyway, I had to read a critical article that was written about the story and I found one about Wharton and Mimesis and it was amazing! Basically it  said that Undine Spragg (the horrid wench in the story) was forced to be so extravagant in her rebellion toward the patriarchal discourse because she had to break free of its repression.

This got me thinking...are women still repressed in similar ways by men today?
-we wear what men think looks good on us. We spend exorbitant amounts of money on those clothes(clothing)
-we go to parties and places where we know men we might be attracted to will be (social lives)
-we workout like crazy people to look good because men say they like us to look good (physical)

ooobbbbviously there are numerous exceptions to the rule. I for one wear high heels despite the fact men usually tell me not to since I grow a foot with them on. Whitney Bush goes to the gym because it makes her feel great and to motivate me. And Christine drags Mike to whatever social thing she wants to go to! and by drag I mean allows to accompany. ok, so those are my thoughts. I just don't want to be stuck in this force field that is the masculine discourse on how women SHOULD be. I'm against it.

p.s-this does not make me a feminist.

  3. there's a difference between being a feminist, which I think is believing in equality, and being psycho.
