The assignment was to define a word in a a formal poem so I chose sestina which is where you use the same 6 end words but mix them up in a certain order. It's ridiculously fun. Loved writing this even though it needs lots of revising.
Vacuous
It’s when you look into his eyes and empty
space fills up the nothingness. No matter
how full your words, the pupils still stay hollow;
lengths and lengths of space refused to fill
with what you’ve said to him, for him alone.
He stares right past your words, around your face.
Weariness can show upon your face
but eyes hold worries, wishing they were empty.
The act of wearying itself alone,
enough to make the smallest moment matter
too much to pack each crevice tight to fill
the spaces in your mind that oft’ keep hollow.
But his view will not see that hollow,
stuffed tightly in lines etched on your face-
Begging for kind words, from him, to fill
in behind those eyes so deep and empty.
Those words that validate and show you matter
to him, for him. It makes you not alone
in a world that tells you you’re alone
when he can take your tears and with them hollow
out the lies, and fears-say those don’t matter.
He’d take them on, the burden from your face
now shared—his eyes now full, no longer empty.
It’s you, your heart with which you want to fill
his eyes and heart and soul. With you you’d fill
him up, and you with him, no thoughts alone
or void of depth, mercy never empty
but overflowing into every hollow
of the self. Empathy--his face
will show he feels the graveness of your matter,
though it may to you be a matter
for only half your heart the hurt does fill.
Validate in pain upon his face,
to know your furrowed brow is not alone
and see his cheeks like yours are haunted, hollow--
a drum head, beating with my heart-empty.
If only you could fill those empty eyes
of yours with matter, the deep hollows of
my face released, so tired of being alone.
